Toothman Rice, P.L.L.C. is an accounting and consulting firm with offices in Bridgeport, Buckhannon, Fairmont and Morgantown, West Virginia. The Firm has provided career opportunities for many since 1952. With a position at Toothman Rice comes a commitment from the Members (Partners) to help each associate realize his or her fullest potential. This is accomplished through a carefully designed career-long training and development program. We recognize that our people are our most valuable asset.

We’re Just The Right Size

Over the years we have realized consistent growth that has been the result of our commitment to technical proficiency and quality service. As a result we have a large and varied client base including businesses of all types and sizes. This diversity allows our associates the opportunity to be involved in a great variety of engagements. There are few industry types in West Virginia that are not represented in our client base.

The first few years at Toothman Rice is a tremendous broad-based learning experience. With well-rounded experience as a foundation, opportunities abound to specialize in a variety of industries and services. Many of our associates specialize in service areas such as accounting and auditing, taxation, technology, business valuation, and business consulting. Others emphasize a particular industry such as oil and gas, construction, health care, government contracting, non-profit, retail and others. We are small enough that our associates, including members, are very accessible to fellow associates and clients, and large enough to provide our clients with the highest level of quality service and our associates with the full range of career opportunities.

Training and Career Development

We attribute the success we have enjoyed over the years to our commitment to quality service at all costs and by hiring, developing and retaining quality people. To insure this quality, the firm committed to peer review as early as 1976. Our professional associates have received at least forty hours of continuing education yearly since 1974. Peer review and continuing education requirements were not part of the profession until many years later.

Training and development at Toothman Rice begins on your first day with the firm. Through the use of training tutorials you will become familiar with our technology driven approach to accounting and auditing, tax and consulting engagements. A training and development program is designed for each associate to insure that individual and firm goals are attained. Staff training programs designed for the appropriate level of experience and competency form the basis of all technical training. Specific continuing education is provided in the many specialty service and industry areas that are important to the firm.

The demands placed on the accounting profession by our clients and the business community is increasing daily. Only a commitment to life-long learning will assure the level of competency required to meet the challenge. Toothman Rice has made the commitment to provide the resources necessary to each member and associate to help them attain all of the pertinent information that they will need to meet the challenges that will face them in the business world.

Advancement

Each associate is given the opportunity to advance at his or her own pace, while at the same time being challenged to accept increased levels of responsibility. Constructive feedback is one of the important ingredients of an effective staff development program. At Toothman Rice, associates receive job performance reviews following all large engagements. At the beginning of each year associates and members agree on performance plans which detail how and where you would like to go professionally. These plans are established for the short-term (one year) and long-term. The objective is to help you reach your next level of attainment. At this annual planning session, compensation increases and promotions are discussed and communicated. Promotions are measured by advancement through established staff levels, which are described as follows:

The Staff Accountant...
... is a member of the professional associates involved primarily in entry-level functions. They are in the process of becoming oriented to the firm and its procedures. The work of staff accountants is the foundation on which the work of others is based.

The In-Charge Accountant...
... is ready to assume more complex duties than the Staff Accountant. They have demonstrated the readiness and ability to plan, direct, supervise and evaluate those who assist them during an engagement.

The Senior Accountant...
... can control the engagement process, has a thorough knowledge of principles and standards and has excellent communications skills. They assume day-to-day conduct of the fieldwork and spend time in the field as required. They assign work, and supervise by providing guidance to staff.

The Supervisor...
... can handle all aspects of an engagement from beginning to end. The Supervisor has developed and can maintain client contacts in a professional manner. They review others’ work for compliance with technical and firm standards.

The Manager...
... has demonstrated the desire and ability to develop and maintain client relationships.. They have complete knowledge of the firm’s philosophy, its policies and opinions on financial matters.

A Manager has knowledge of general economic and political trends and of possible tax or other legislation that could affect the business climate. A Manager is considered a liaison between the member and the client; he is responsible for all phases of an engagement. They demonstrate professional leadership qualities and assist in the communication of the firm’s policies and procedures.
